There’s a strange trend going on. More and more games are hitting the market every year yet stores like Toys R Us have gone out of business and Target is reducing their shelf-space allocated to games. Crazy, right? So here’s a list of the 10 best games and where to find them as 2020 approaches…and these are all family-friendly games. 1. What The Film?! by Lethal Chicken Games- What The Film?! is a party game where players combine three cards: one ACTOR, one PLOT and one SET to create a funny movie. Pitch, vote, backstab, win. Out of the 400 cards, 200 of them feature beautiful artwork and the content is really funny ranging from a metrosexual hobo to someone discovering their superhero powers…one can see where things could go. Why on the Hot List? What The Film?! was launched as a Target exclusive last year, but only in a few locations. It became a 2019 finalist for Toy of the Year from The Toy Association, but was banned from being sold on Amazon until just a few months ago. It was featured in celebrity gifting suites and was also the offical game given out to celebrities who will appear on the 2019-2020 season of Hollywood Game Nights. 2. Camping with Sasquatch also by Lethal Chicken Games– Camping with Sasquatch is a light, quick card game with a ROAR! A cross between Rummy and Slapjack, Camping with Sasquatch checks all the boxes for being both family-friendly but strategic and vindictive enough to keep the adults coming back for more! Roar with one card left, or face the penalites of the Sasquatch! Why on the Hot List? The creators of the game, Mike Szalajko and Alex Mackey are currently nominated for a 2019 TAGIE Award for Rising Star Innovator of the Year. Their games are fun, quirky and have outstanding artwork. So far they’ve created two award-nominated games that work well for both kids AND adults. 3. Sabacc by Disney Theme Park Merchandise – Sabacc is “perhaps the galaxy’s oldest and most popular card game” according to starwars.com. It’s weird to think this card game is made by a theme park, but the game is fun, the components are great and it’s just off kilter enough to transport you to a world of scum and villainy. Why on the Hot List? Sabacc is only sold at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at either Disneyland or Walt Disney World for $16.99. You can find it on ebay, it will cost twice as much, but certainly much cheaper than a trip to Disney World. 4. Unicorns & Zombies by Unicorns & Zombies, LLC – “Lose Friends. Gain Allies.” is the tagline for this new game. Successfully launched through Kickstarter, this game is freshly listed on Amazon and will eventually hit other retail locations beginning in 2020. There’s, like, a totally tubular 80’s vibe and the videos and website are super rad, dude. Why on the Hot List? It hits all the hot buttons of current trends…zombies are back, unicorns are always magical and who doesn’t love the 80’s? It’s both retro and current all at the same time with totally bodacious artwork. 5. Can’t Catch Harry by James Rallison aka TheOdd1sOut – You might know him from his YouTube Channel, TheOdd1sOut, but now he’s created a fun, fast and furious game called Can’t Catch Harry. It has colorful minatures that players must capture to gain the most points. It’s several rounds of frantic frenzy and the person to hit 11 points first, wins the game. Why on the Hot List? It successfully funded on Kickstarter, it’s by the uber-cool TheOdd1sOut, and it is just hitting retail in time for the 2019 holiday season. 6. Creatures and Cupcakes by Social Sloth Games – The storyline is feeding cupcakes to creatures! Need anything more be said? This press-your-luck game is cute and has an epic theme with tiny little cupcake pieces. Why on the Hot List? As another Kickstarter success, this division of Grey Fox Games has also just begun hitting retail. Available on Walmart.com, Creatures and Cupcakes will delight those younger players while sending the adults to the nearest cupcakery. 7. Exiled Legends by TeeTurtle – From the creators of Unstable Unicorns comes Exiled Legends, a slightly more complex, strategic card game. Choose an exiled champion, assemble your team and defeat your enemies in this 30-60 minute game. Why on the Hot List? Based on the smashing success of the award-winning Unstable Unicorns, everything TeeTurtle touches seems to turn to gold. Based on the cool artwork and similar mechanic, this game should be no different. 8. Growl by Vigour, Inc. – Growl takes the social deduction game to a whole new level. Players don’t die off in this game…they simply turn into werewolves bite by bite, frightfully leaving a single player as the lone human. Why on the Hot List? Joey Vigour is the genius behind Chaosmos and with Growl as his first game under the banner of his own company, expect unbridled creativity to abound. 9. Disney Villainous by Ravensburger – Be a villain, cast curses and determine fates. The figurines are catchy and the art work is typical top-notch Disney quality. Why on the Hot List? While this isn’t a new game, it has won awards and just released a few expansions making this stay relevant through the end of 2019 and into 2020. 10. Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: A Gemstone Mining Game by USAopoly – this super cute game has lots of fun pieces from sparkly gems to minecarts to coins and cards. Press your luck as dwarfs mine for gemstones to earn “pie points”. Why on the Hot List? Sparkly gems, pie and dwarfs! What’s not to love?! The Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs theme is adorable and clever. And combining it to earn pie brings an element that’s out-of-the-box but still relevant to the theme. Every year as the holiday decorations go up and shopping days dwindle down to the day of giving (or reckoning) buying and finding that perfect gift can become increasingly difficult, not to mention expensive if what you are looking for is one of those “must-have”, but out-of-stock items! Here are our predictions: The Top 10 Hot Holiday Gifts That Will Become Impossible To Find. 10. Lethal Chicken Games: Two new games…What The Film?! a party game and Camping with Sasquatch. What The Film?! has players combine three cards: one ACTOR, one PLOT and one SET to create a funny movie. Pitch, vote, backstab, win. Camping with Sasquatch on the other hand is a light, quick card game that’s a cross between Rummy and Slapjack. Fast, fun and “furry-ous” with silly artwork, this looks to be the “next big thing” in games. Why on the Hot List? What The Film?! was featured in celebrity gifting suites and swag bags during various awards shows and celebrity events. It was also the offical game given out to celebrities who will appear on the 2019 season of Hollywood Game Nights (shot in early October 2018). As a new company releasing their first two games this year, the quantities produced are at or under 10,000. So when they’re gone, there will not be enough time to restock before Christmas. You can get What The Film?! now at Amazon.com and Camping with Sasquatch will be available on Amazon.com beginning November 1st, 2018. 9. LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle: It’s big, its detailed, it’s LEGO AND it’s Harry Potter! What’s not to love?! These sets are not just for kids any more. Adults collect them, fanatics build them and Harry Potter fans will go crazy for this incredibly intricate castle. For a more affordable option, check out the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall. Why on the Hot List? Between kids, adults and Harry Potter fans of all ages pining for the ultimate Harry Potter LEGO set, this castle will be in high demand. Recently released in the last quarter of 2018, these sets are only on the market for so long and then they are retired. Try finding Indiana Jones LEGO…good luck! 8. The Incredibles 2 Jack-Jack Attacks Plush (and Raccoon): Between the “fire” lighting, the “laser eyes” lights and the “lightning” lights, what’s not to love about this adorable, but lethal baby. Possibly the biggest fan favorite Incredible, Jack-Jack coupled with a cute raccoon checks all the boxes. A toy loved by girls, boys and fanboys will be a holiday fave. Why on the Hot List? It’s one of the few “dolls” that works as an “action figure” as well. With the success and appeal of Disney • Pixar’s The Incredibles 2, this will rapidly disappear from the shelves to reappear for good little fanboys and fangirls on Christmas morning. 7. Num Noms Lipgloss Truck Craft Kit: If you could concoct your own Hello Kitty, but it’s functional and smells good and maybe even tastes good, then you’d probably be talking about Num Noms. The Lip Gloss Truck is one of the latest creations from this adorable scent-ilicious line of toys where one can mix flavors and sparkles to make their own personalized lip gloss. Why on the Hot List? Cute. Delicious. New. Existing fan-base and of couse, sparkles! 6. Star Wars FurReal Ultimate Co-Pilot Chewie: Grown men will want this doll. It’s like a Chewbacca plushie and an iPhone had a baby. Chewie roars, purrs, snores, laughs and responds based on what is happening to him through the use of accelerameters. Why on the Hot List? It’s already hard to find on shelves. And while available at online, reviews are already showing love from little boys, little girls and adults buying it for themselves. 5. Hatchimals Mystery: It’s the ultimate unboxing for kids and there’s just something about getting something and not knowing what it’s going to be. Hence the popularity of those themed mystery boxes that sell like crazy at Comic Conventions. These cute fluffy critters hatch, learn your name and grow from baby to kid as they’re played with, held and cuddled. Why on the Hot List? The mystery element is hard to resist and Hatchimals already have a track record of being a highly sought after Christmas gift with last year’s craze being the Hatchimals Pengualas. 4. Twisty Petz: Kitties, puppies, unicorns and pandas…that turn into bracelets! They’re cheap, make great stocking stuffers and it’s like a cute Transformers that you can wear. Why on the Hot List? It’s a quick, small, low-cost item that can fit into a stocking. Makes for a great, easy gift and it is something girls will love to play with and wear. 3. Grumblies: Pomsies rough and tough answer to their cutsie pink and purple namesake. Furball monsters have a meltdown when they’re given attention. Why on the Hot List? Whether or not these will catch on, time will tell. But based on the abundant success of cute interactive plushies and the comparatively sparse array of interactive tough guy plushies, we think this will become increasingly difficult to find towards the end of 2018. Need another angry plushie? Check out Lethal Chicken Games’ tough chick. 2. Fingerlings HUGS: After last year’s Fingerlings craze, they’re back but this time bigger, softer and they fart. As a full-sized plush, these Fingerlings are sure to be a hit by playing on the popularity of last year’s frenzy. Why on the Hot List? Parents still reeling from not being able to get their princesses last year’s toy craze are sure to remedy that mistake by getting this year’s bigger, softer, fartier version. 1. WowWee Untamed T-Rex (and Unicorn) by Fingerlings: Claiming both our number one and two spots, Fingerlings has expanded their insanely popular and cute creatures to appeal to the boys and future paleontologists. It roars, chomps and of course farts. Why on the Hot List? It’s cute, it works for boys and girls, the pricepoint is under $15 and it fits in a stocking. These little critters are sure to get snatched up quickly. #ToysSellingOut #Top10 #TopTen #TopTenHolidayGifts #Top10HolidayGifts #games #fingerlings #grumblies #TwistyPetz #Hatchimals #StarWars #Furreal #Chewbacca #NumNoms #JackJack #NumNoms #HarryPotter #Lego #WhatTheFilm #Camping #Sasquatch #Film #LethalChicken #gifts We love to play games. We love to make games. Basically, we love games. So from both a personal and professional standpoint, we wanted to share our list of the best games to give (or get) for the holidays, especially for that person that may not be quite so into the heavier games. So while games like Gloomhaven and Blood Rage are both awesome games, not everyone is going to commit to a huge instruction manual or a long game. And they’re more than $25. 10. Sushi Go Party!- $19.99 at Amazon. A light, card-drafting set collection game. Pick your favorite sushi and pass the leftovers. Build the best sushi platter to win the game. 9. Exploding Kittens– $19.99 at Target and other retailers. It’s Russian roulette with cards. And without actually dying. Don’t draw the Exploding Kitten to win the game. The only downside is once you lose the game, you lose interest while everyone else is still intensly interested. The artwork is funny to read the first few times and the game can feel intense as the stack gets smaller. 8. Bang!: The Dice Game- $15 at Amazon. Cowboys and Indians, sheriffs and outlaws. Everyone has a secret role. Roll the dice to shoot your neighbor. Just be careful not to shoot the wrong person or you’ll let the wrong side of the law win the game. 7. For Sale Card Game- $24.95 at Amazon - Bid on everything from an outhouse to a penthouse and then sell them off to win the most amount of money. Whether your strategy is to be the slumlord or a highroller the artwork is funny but sadly the money is fake. 6. Bottom of the 9th- $12.99 at Target. It’s the bottom of the ninth and it’s up to you to either pitch your way to a win or guess the pitch that’s coming at you. With a very nostalgic look and a mix of male and female players this is a beautiful but fast-playing game. For an additional $13 you can get the expansion pack which includes super cool wooden peanuts and golden trophies. 5. Machi Koro– $24.19 at Target. As one of the most successful, light, city building games, Machi Koro has ultra cool retro artwork ranging from sushi bars to amusement parks. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but Machi Koro can be built in less than 30 minutes. 4. Weird Things Humans Search For– $19.99 at Target only. It’s goofy, it’s current and you know we’ve all seen the auto-fill pop up and thought to oursevles…WHAT?! This is a great party game that puts the digital world we live in, into a physical board game. Camping with Sasquatch– $15 at Amazon (November 2018) A hybrid of Rummy and Slapjack, this cute Big Foot themed card game is a quick and easy game with fun artwork, a bit of strategy and a dose of take that. You can be nice when playing with your kids, or be calculatingly evil when playing with your friends…or frenemies. Sasquatch cards can be played as wild cards, or played against other players forcing them to quickly slap the Sasquatch. It’s fun, fast and furious. 2. Tournament at Camelot– $23.99 at Amazon. Use arrows, sorcery, deception and even alchemy to inflict wounds on your opponents. While these high quality cards feel like you’re playing with something lifted from an ancient Bible, you’ll ultimately be the victor by mainting your health while trying to kill thy neighbor. 1. What The Film?!– $24.99 at Target only. while we’re bias to this game, it’s at the top of our list for a good reason. It’s a party game, WITH ARTWORK! The game is beautiful, spawns creativity and as Twist Gaming said, “I was laughing like a hyena the entire time. I’d definitely play this before Cards Against Humanity.” Combine three cards, actor, plot and set to create your movie. Pitch, vote, backstab, win. |
